The Way Life Used To Be : Rockport Harbor

This collection of slides was produced by RBCYS and the Penobscot Marine Museum. Offering visual insight into the way life used be in the early to mid 19th century on and around Rockport Harbor, Maine through the lens of various photographers familiar with the area. These photos were taken over a span of 75 years.

In 1973 Rockport Boat Club members Sani Wolf, Lance Lee, John Chatfield and many others helped to launch the Youth Sailing Program. The mission was and is to sponsor and promote sailing, boating and other marine-related activities, with particular emphasis on education and training opportunities for children in the community.

At the Rockport Boat Club we hope to create a love of sailing and the ocean that will bring former students back to the water for fun, relaxation, and enjoyment throughout their lives.

We believe that to create a lifelong sailor, comfort on the water must be grown and nurtured. Personal connections between students and the community must be created. Students must be encouraged to engage with and learn from the sailing environment. Joyful memories should be created through land-based games, harbor exploration and sailing adventures.

We are honored to continue this program today, 52 years later. To be able to offer the youth in the community sailing opportunities through the nostalgia of our maritime tradition.
